What are DOT physicals?
DOT physicals are required by the Department of Transportation when you apply for a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) license and to renew it every two years. This health exam ensures that you’re emotionally, physically, and mentally healthy enough to safely drive a semi-truck, bus, or another commercial motor vehicle without risk to yourself or others on the road.
Cermak Immediate Care’s DOT physicals meet the requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Illinois Department of Transportation. The skilled medical team has extensive training and is licensed as certified medical examiners to perform DOT physicals.
What happens during a DOT physical?
The Cermak Immediate Care team reviews your medical history, lifestyle, medications, and any symptoms during a DOT physical. They check your blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs and complete a physical exam. To screen for potential concerns, your provider evaluates your mouth, eyes, limbs, breathing, heartbeat, reflexes, and nervous system.
You might need urinalysis, blood work, other diagnostic tests, and vision and hearing screenings. On-site labs are available at Cermak Immediate Care’s offices for added convenience.
After fulfilling DOT physical exam requirements, Cermak Immediate Care issues you a medical card. If you don’t pass the physical, simply schedule another appointment (you might need treatment for an acute or chronic medical condition first). If you fail the exam three times, you can’t retest for 30 days.
After completing a DOT exam, your specialist submits your medical exam report to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) and gives you a copy for your records.
How often should I schedule DOT physicals?
Schedule a DOT physical at Cermak Immediate Care when applying for a commercial license for the first time and every two years to maintain your commercial driver’s license. Sometimes, more frequent DOT physicals are needed if you have diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), or another chronic condition.
